EA Publications - Dry Weather Advise for Fishery Managers

Although we have had some rain recently, groundwater levels are low and there is a risk of low water levels this summer. The links below contain files with information on managing your stillwater or river fishery during hot and/or dry weather. Thank you to Ade Bicknell, Loddon & Wey Fisheries Officer, for forwarding these for the LFCC.

Angling Trust - Water Quality Monitoring Network (WQMN)

UPDATE - This scheme is now being rolled out nationally and kits will be available for clubs and anglers to monitor their stretches of River and log data.

For those of you that managed to attend the recent LFCC meeting or recieved the minutes by subscribing to our mailchimp notifications, you may well have looked at the link to the Angling Trusts Water Quality Monitoring Newtwork. With the ongoing issues of general pollution in our rivers and the excessive discharges of sewage, this would is an ideal oppertunity for those angling clubs with stretches of rivers, and especially those with nearby Sewage Treatment Works (STW) and/or Combined Sewage Outfalls (CSO), to monitor the water quality and feed back valuable data. The data is collected either via PC or a smartphone app.

The initail rollout of the scheme was in the River Severn Catcment but is due to be expanded nationally in the next couple of months. You can register your interest to take part in this by following the link above and emailing Kristian Kent at his address at the bottom of that page.

If there is sufficient intererst from clubs or individuals within the LFCC, there may be a possiblity of allocating some Fisheries Improvement Fund (FIP) money towards the cost of the testing kits. So if your part of a club and would be interested then please drop us an email at This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.and we can get an idea of numbers an the potential areas of the Loddon catchment we would be able to cover and report on.

Pennywort Munching Weevil Released to Combat Invasive Plant

In a world-first, South American weevils have been released in England to fight against the invasive non-native species floating pennywort, as part of Invasive Species Week.

An ornamental pond plant originating from North America, floating pennywort has the ability to grow up to 20 centimetres each day, forming dense rafts over our rivers that harm native plant, fish and invertebrate species, through competition and cutting oxygen levels in water. Floating pennywort impedes navigation routes, disrupts recreational activities like fishing and canoeing and exacerbates flood risk.

The Rivers Trust Sewage Map: A user's guide

Michelle Walker and Christine Colvin

Monday 25th April | 1-1:45pm

The Rivers Trust Sewage Map has contributed to a rapid change in public opinion about rivers, showing the public the extent of pollution in their local area. In this webinar, Director for Communications & Partnerships Christine Colvin is joined by Technical Director Michelle Walker who led the team to create the map. Together, they will explain how to maximise the map and its new features added for 2022, such as filters for parliamentary constituency, local authority area, and water company catchments.

The session will be useful for anyone who is interested in investigating sewage pollution, including those in the environment sector, sports and interest groups, policy makers, the media, and anyone who wants to respond to the government's Storm Overflows Discharge Reduction Plan. There will be a Q&A and a chance to share suggestions for further data sharing.

The webinar will take place on Zoom - joining details will be sent to registrants via email ahead of the event.

Click the link to register - the session will be recorded if for those who aren't able to make it.
