The Loddon Fisheries & Conservation Consultative, along with Sparsholt College, Hampshire have arranged a visit to the College including the Aquatic Research and Conservation Center, Salmonid Rearing and Trials Center and the Sparsholt Fishery and Lake.
The event is scheduled for the 26th August 2023 at 2pm and is expected to last for approximately 2hrs. Further details can be found on the events page here.

American Signal Crayfish: Fighting A Loosing Battle?

American Signal Crayfish (Pacifastacus leniusculus) have been widely established in the UK since the 1970's and have had many adverse impacts including the near extinction of the native White Clawed Crayfish (Austropotamobius pallipe). This presentation discusses efforts to control this invasive species in south west England.
Dr Nicky Green has been working with crayfish since 2003 and has recently completed a PhD on the control of American signal crayfish. She focusses on practical and effective methods to control invasive crayfish and has worked on Exmoor and elsewhere since 2015 trialling new and innovative techniques.

Loddon Catchment Partnership And Action Plan

The South East Rivers Trust (SERT) is delighted to launch their Storymap about the River Loddon, on behalf of the catchment partnership. Discover the landscape, the pressures both the river and surrounding land face and the work being done to improve the river for people and nature. The partnership involves a huge number of organisations and groups, working to improve the whole river network rather than sections in isolation.

Toxic pet flea and tick treatments are polluting UK freshwaters

Parasite treatments and preventatives we put on our pets are finding their way into UK waters in concentrations that are toxic to aquatic species.
Parasiticides are commonly applied as ‘spot-on’ treatments on dogs and cats to prevent or kill fleas or ticks, but they contain toxic chemicals that are making it into UK rivers and ponds, particularly in urban areas. In a new briefing paper, Imperial College London researchers say the evidence points to an urgent need to review risk assessments and prescribing practices for these chemicals.
